With a very special guest star.

I'm sorry. Have we met? )
maculategiraffe: (Default)
So I feel guilty about even having written this because I'm like "self, at this moment where you are writing this thing you should be working on The Maiden, or doing LJ housekeeping, or unpacking boxes, or something" and "self, you are never going to get on this whole selling SB thing if you keep writing random follow-up one-shots instead," also I am trying to title things now by ripping off song lyrics which is at least a step in the right direction from never titling anything at all, also I have to go do laundry right now.

post-Lee, ~2600 words

Should I know who that is? )

Thank you so much to everyone for your kind birthday wishes. I've been having a hard time lately, and completely off LJ, so I apologize for anything I've missed. Welcome also to people who showed up here after [personal profile] lit_gal's kind recommendation (such a frisson! Beautiful Broken is one of the stories I pretty much never get tired of rereading, so I'm having this "OMG she looked at me!" moment right now). I apologize that you've found me in the middle of a fairly severe depressive episode (for those who don't know, my husband died earlier this year, and I'm still kind of... dealing). I used to be better than this at responding, and hope that one day I will be again. In the meantime, please bear with me.

On the other hand, one of my coping strategies when I'm feeling on the brink is writing, so I have two stories that should go up soon, both SB 'verse, and I also have this, which isn't a story, more of a metathingy. See, for the most part, I've ignored the sporadic kerfufflings over whether girls are allowed to write m/m, whether it's exploitative or ignorant or what, because I don't really feel the need to defend myself on that point, but I've been having one of those things, you know, a headache with pictures ("An idea?" "Mmm! Mmmhmm!") about related issues in the Slave Breakers universe, so I guess here's my attempt to ramblingly articulate it. Contains spoilers for the whole Slave Breakers shebang, so if you haven't read it yet, fair warning. Also contains profanity, although if you're here at all, you probably don't so much have a problem with that.

Thoughts on yaoi, sort of )

So it's been way too long since I wrote anything in the Slave Breakers 'verse. I miss these guys. And I get plot bunnies. I've just been kind of working on Maiden for awhile. But Maiden needs a rest as I plot towards the conclusion and get the replies-to-comments post wrapped up.

Anyway, for the holidays, since I failed at getting out a holiday story, here are four Slave Breakers plot bunnies that have wriggled in, post-Lee, in 100-word drabble form. I'm pretty sure I'll end up writing all these stories, eventually. Of course, if you guys find them intriguing, that will be incentive. :) Plus-- I did say five-- a bit (not spoilery for the story so far) from the next chapter of Intake Counselor.

Just posted a general Slave Breakers fanart challenge type thing over at [profile] slavebreakers. Anybody who is a visually-artsy type, or knows one, is encouraged to go look. :)

Because everyone is at least nineteen times as awesome to me as I deserve: [livejournal.com profile] maemae133 has made a Slave Breakers fan video.

I'm feeling a bit melty and helplessly :D-y right now.

So. Something is happening that I still can't quite get my mind around: People are writing fanfic of "The Slave Breakers." And it's awesome.

The secret belief that this is actually all some sort of ridiculous egotistical hallucination on my part has kept me from pimping it here before now, but its awesomeness has now officially overpowered that. So.

[livejournal.com profile] me_ya_ri has written "Finding Home", a one-shot with original characters and cameos from Holden and Bran, and is writing "Losing Yourself To Find Yourself" (parts one and two), a multi-chapter WIP with different original characters.

[livejournal.com profile] morgan_cian is writing "Welcome to Tenarus", a multi-chapter WIP where a (slave-owning) family of original characters moves to Holden and Alix's hometown.

[livejournal.com profile] cgravenstone, as part of the undefined semi-collaborative work that is me putting his original fictional LJ persona into an ongoing Slave Breakers-'verse side story, has written a one-shot with original but semi-canonical characters, "Anniversary". (By the way, Crimson, baby, I love you, and I would never discriminate against you for being fictional, but oy vey, the semantics of it all!)

[livejournal.com profile] anne_squires has written a one-shot with Holden and Bran, "Encounters".

And now [livejournal.com profile] wickhouse2005, whose teeming imagination has given me more plot bunnies than I can possibly ever do justice, has finally caved (despite her protested and entirely chimerical "lack of writing talent") and written a perfectly lovely Jer/Holden vignette. (Check the comments of that post for a nice little follow-up ficlet by [livejournal.com profile] morgan_cian.)

But [livejournal.com profile] wickhouse2005 agreed to post her bit of fic to LJ only when I bribed her with the promise of canonizing one of her throwaway references. So here's the story I promised her, which takes place in the fourth week of Bran's initial training process. (Hope those of you who've been wanting more scenes of Bran's training enjoy, too.)

Did you ever attend your former masters in the bath? )

I discovered this site while googling for cool eyepatches, and ever since then, I've been playing around on it whenever I'm having to sit still and I'm too jumpy to read (or write, or knit) anything more substantial. Just found this page. Intrigued!

And when I am intrigued, lo, I ramble! )
maculategiraffe: (Default)
Some of you have seen this already, but I think it's time to make it official, as a recent reader's response to the first version of the scene (hi, [livejournal.com profile] kaydyy!) reminded me that it doesn't seem to have conveyed precisely what I wanted it to convey.

So: this is the rewritten version of the chapter. I'm linking it on the index instead of the old one. The changes start about halfway down. (I also made some minor edits to this chapter, for continuity. If anyone spots any other discontinuity, please let me know?)

As "Lee" winds to a close (well, not yet, but the end is actually in sight now, believe it or not), I've been thinking about the future of Slave Breakers, and it occurred to me that I should really put together a list of all the prompts, requests, suggestions, and plot bunnies I've gotten that I haven't written yet.

The problem is how to gather them all together-- and it's going to be quite an endeavor. I obviously should have been pasting them to a .txt file all along, but I've got a good memory and I've been coasting on that. I'll be adding to this as I get time and opportunity to do a more thorough trawl of my comments, but I thought I'd put up what I've got so far, announce the existence of this post (I'll link to it from my index, too, eventually, when I get around to it) and offer the opportunity for people to suggest anything else they might like to be added to the list, remind me of a previous request, and/or express enthusiasm about any one of these that's already up.

It always interests me when I get notes along the lines of "I want Lee to be my boy!" or "I want Holden to be my master!" So...

[Poll #1182426]
maculategiraffe: (Default)
First: Man, this guy looks freakishly like my own mental image of Yves. I was actually startled when I saw him in a preview for "Gossip Girl." Come play Yves in the made-for-TV movie of "The Slave Breakers," Mr. Crawford!

Second: speaking of casting the made-for-TV movie, I've never actually described Bran physically: it just happened that way in the first story, since the POV was from behind Bran's eyes and I could never see my way to a scene where he ogled himself in the mirror, and by now I figure everyone has already made up an image in their heads. So I would be fascinated to know what anyone who's read the story so far pictures Bran as looking like. So far I've heard "young Tab Hunter" and "Jake Richardson." (If you don't have an actor, specs like hair and eye color would also be interesting. Though I'm afraid I am going to have to describe his eyes in the upcoming third story of the trilogy, due to the POV it's being written from.)

Third: for [livejournal.com profile] quill_lumos, who wished I would write chapter 14 from Bran's perspective, 100 quick words:

Jesse 14a-and-a-half )
maculategiraffe: (Default)
This scene takes place fairly early on in the missing period between the end of the first 15-part story and the beginning of "Jesse." I present it for a few reasons: [livejournal.com profile] skylerbird requested a side scene with just the three boys, and this one establishes a certain dynamic between them that pretty much still holds; I feel like Jer's gotten slightly short shrift so far in the story, so he gets to talk a bit more here; it clarifies a few things Bran now knows about Jer, Holden and Alix's shared background, which inform the way he deals with all of them in the present; and I'm buying time while I beat chapter twelve into submission.

This is the index page for all my original fiction set in the "Slave Breakers" universe (also my original creation). I try to keep this page updated in a timely fashion, but the best way to make sure you never miss an update to this story is to add my livejournal to your friends list, if you have one. And I always welcome all comments, questions, and feedback, whether you have a livejournal account or not!

NOTES ON THE ONE-SHOT FICLETS:

  • I've organized these roughly by chronology, not of when they were written, but of when they took place, and categorized them based on where they fall in the chronology of the multi-chapter fics.
  • Stories added the last time I updated this page are in bold.
