Well gosh. It's been a while.

I've been working through a lot of personal stuff, with my grief counselor and on my own, and it's been somewhat rocky going, internally speaking. (You guys aren't the only ones I dropped off the map for-- I've gotten some "uh, so, it would be nice to know you're alive" messages from RL friends too.) But I'm alive and healthy and gainfully employed (as a barista at Starbucks! And I kind of love it!) and a couple of days ago I cracked open the word processor and was like "oh hey, that's right, I really really like to write."

So, I've got some stuff that will be going up soon, I expect, new chapters of The Mother and such-- I've got like two proper chapters and then the next installment in that Scheherezade thing-- but while I'm trying to get the engine to turn over, anybody who wants to give me a jump by suggesting a quick piece they'd like me to write would be much appreciated, and I'll do my best.

Your comments and responses give me such joy and encouragement to continue writing and posting, which obviously has been a difficult thing for me to keep up with lately, though I'm trying hard. Thank you all x a billion. You are wonderful and thoughtful and you make me a very happy writer lady.

Here's the first chapter of the sequel (it's called The Mother, natch, though as in The Maiden, you might not find out for a little while who the title actually refers to). It picks up pretty much exactly where The Maiden left off. I tried to work a teeny bit of "previously, in the Daughterverse" into the chapter but I think you probably need to have read The Maiden to make any sense of this. Maybe not, I dunno. Let me go ahead and post before I psych myself out of it again.

Okay, it ain't much for such a long wait, but it's the second-to-last chapter of Maiden, and I think I've got the last chapter worked out, and then quite a bit of the next story written, which is an immediate sequel and really only separated for stylistic purposes. So.

(Also, totally unrelated, except that the song I picked to go with this entry is one of the songs on my kickass new workout playlist that is enabling me to do seven miles per workout on the treadmill [impressive for me, okay!] and contract enormous blisters on my feet without even noticing because the music is so kickass,* and another kickass song from the playlist is available as a free mp3 download on Amazon at the moment, so everybody should get it: Shout Out Louds, "Walls")

So I feel guilty about even having written this because I'm like "self, at this moment where you are writing this thing you should be working on The Maiden, or doing LJ housekeeping, or unpacking boxes, or something" and "self, you are never going to get on this whole selling SB thing if you keep writing random follow-up one-shots instead," also I am trying to title things now by ripping off song lyrics which is at least a step in the right direction from never titling anything at all, also I have to go do laundry right now.

Daughterverse thingy

OK, I'm still not-- entirely sure-- where I'm going to put this in the overall Daughterverse narrative, but that's one of the advantages of posting my stuff on a Livejournal as I go, is I can be like, "Hey guys, I wrote this thing, how bout that?" While I'm working on the structure of the end of The Maiden and all.

This might be like... an epilogue to The Maiden or a prologue to The Mother, I'm not sure. I'll figure it out and then index it properly. But anyway, it's done as a piece/chapter/whatever, so I'm putting it up. Cause I can! Cause I got no editor to say me nay!

Yeah, that projected schedule worked out great, right. I'm sorry, guys. Work stress and general stress is kicking my ass right now. Summer's coming up, though, and I can get a lot more done then. I'm just going to get what I can done right now and try not to beat myself up too bad. I forgot how panicky I get at the end of any multi-chapter story, trying to wrap things up decently, and The Maiden is really giving me hives.

I'm going to post the Babysitter chapter tonight though, because I'm not trying to wrap that up, and also because I've been bribed to (what up, mydonald!)-- I'm just not going to reread it first, I'm just going to slam it on up there. And I also just posted a thing in the comments to this entry over at the slavebreakers community that I wrote really fast and sort of liked. So that's there if anybody's interested.

I also have a new counselor therapist person (she's a grief specialist, yeah I know this is way overdue-- I guess it took the one-year anniversary to realize I am not just going to snap out of this anytime soon), and I know you guys will like her as much as I do when I report the following conversation:

her: When are you happiest?
me: Well, I... uh... I write. I write... and I post... online... and I, it's, I've been doing it for awhile...
her: Is that something you want to pursue professionally?
me: Maybe? I've been thinking about it... but that's not, it's just, it's something that I really enjoy doing.
her: What kind of thing do you write?
me: Um...

[...]

me: But anyway, I do try to do stress-relief things. You know, I try to get out in the sun, and exercise, and stuff. Spend time with people.
her: That's good. But you know what you need to be doing more of, is the writing. When you said that about writing, your eyes just lighted up. When you said "it's something I really enjoy."
me: Yeah...
her (firmly): Write more.

Maiden interlude: Sean writes to his mother

So as part of my trying to figure out (which I have been, lately, I've just been sort of slinking around ashamed to show my face) how I'm going to post what I've got written-- especially with The Maiden, which I'm trying to wrap up in 28 chapters, not counting Report Card Day or this, because I cheat and use "interludes" and whatnot) I wrote this, which I'm hoping can function as a sort of stepping stone in the gap in time between what I last posted and the next chapter. It's a letter from Sean to his mom, kind of updating her (and us, by extension) on what's been going on. It's also story-relevant and all, I mean even if you remember everything, but I'm hoping it will serve a memory-jogging purpose as well, so nobody has to go reread a bunch of previous chapters unless they feel like it.

So here, I'll go ahead and get this up.

So here's me trying to get back on LJ. I know it's been forever, and I'm really sorry. I have been dealing with a lot of personal stuff that culminated in a couple of visits to urgent care and a few decisions about the future that will hopefully bear healthy fruit. So-- I'm trying to get back on LJ, yeah. Get back to writing. I'm always happiest when I'm writing.

So that's something to think about.

But in the meantime, I need a game plan for getting back on Livejournal. I am a bit overwhelmed by how long I've been gone, so I need to take it a little bit at a time. I want to post it on here so you guys know what's up and so that I have incentive to stick to the plan instead of just throwing up my hands.

Twenty-three years later...

So, having just posted a story in which Holden is a 20-year-old basket case (Alix is 18 in that story-- I KNOW RIGHT), now I've got this, which is just kind of a classic slaveficcish one-shot, with no real purpose beyond the fact that it's the sort of thing I enjoy writing.

(I think my favorite thing about writing Holden's character is the way in which each person he falls for [romantically or otherwise] turns him into less of an asshole. It's like "Beauty and the Beast," except instead of just one beautiful maiden to break the curse, there are like eleven beautiful people tag-teaming this guy. Fun game: spot the influence of, respectively, Jer, Alix, Yves, Valor, and Bran on the Holden of this story. Jesse and Lee haven't even gotten started yet.)
